Hot Rock & Alternative Songs (formerly known as Rock Songs and Hot Rock Songs) is a record chart published by Billboard magazine. From its debut on June 20, 2009, through October 13, 2012, the chart ranked the airplay of songs across alternative, mainstream rock, and triple A radio stations in the United States. Beginning with the chart dated October 20, 2012, the chart has followed the methodology of the Billboard Hot 100 by incorporating digital download sales, streaming data, and radio airplay of rock songs over all formats. From that time until mid-2020, only the performance of core rock songs, including those with an “alternative bent”, were tabulated and ranked for the chart. With the chart dated June 13, 2020, Billboard revamped the chart to permit a broader selection of songs considered alternative “hybrids” with other genres and renamed it to Hot Rock & Alternative Songs.

The first number-one track on the chart was Green Day’s “Know Your Enemy”. Since its introduction, 54 songs have reached the number-one position on chart. Imagine Dragons have had the most with five, combining for a total of 104 weeks at the summit. Panic! at the Disco’s “High Hopes” spent a record 65 non-consecutive weeks atop the chart, and along with their song “Hey Look Ma, I Made It”, the band claimed the number-one spot on the chart for the entirety of 2019.

  • System Of A Down becomes the fifth artist this week to top the Hard Rock charts, with their long-awaited return single "Protect The Land". They are also the second to hold the first two spots, after Bring Me The Horizon. All seven songs that charted last week remain on the chart, despite five of them falling off the top 50. The two System Of A Down songs are the only debuts this week. With five of seven BMTH songs dropping off the chart this week, the two remaining songs, the two SOAD songs, and the continued presence of AC/DC and I Prevail brings the total hard rock songs to six this week, with seven, potentially eight performing at top 50 levels (A Little Bit Off moves to #4, Wolf Totem returns to #8, with Every Time You Leave at #7). Note: "Shame Shame" is not included in this week's tally. While the Foo Fighters do have songs that would probably chart here, "Shame Shame" is alternative rock.

This Week's Entercom Boost: The Knocks & Foster The People – All About You

Positions Affected: #36 debut on rock airplay, #33 on alt airplay)

Last Week's Entercom Boost: Bakar – 1st Time

Positions Affected: Moves from #27 to #33 on rock airplay, #33 to #30 on alt airplay. The majority of Entercom boosts drop out after the first week. The song also debuts at #37 on the Triple A charts.

On rock airplay, this week's #1 is… Foo Fighters' "Shame Shame", finally beating out All Time Low, shooting up from it's #38 debut from last week. The song debuts at #12 on alt airplay, meaning "Monsters" hits a tenth week at #1 there. The song is boosted by massive amounts of airplay on all three formats, shooting up from #34 to #4 on Mainstream Rock, and debuting at #15 on the Triple A charts. "Shame Shame" notches the band their 7th Rock Airplay #1. This week also sees the reigns of Machine Gun Kelly, Matt Maeson, and Dayglow collapsing, with Machine Gun Kelly and All Time Low beginning to follow (although in MGK's case, he's making way for "my ex's best friend". "Monsters" did have an official remix released recently, but that probably won't bring back attention to the original song). Cannons move into the Top 10. This week is minimal on debuts, coming from Billie Eilish, The Knocks w/ Foster The People, and Asking Alexandria. Over on alternative airplay, Wallows and Clairo remain poised to take #1 from All Time Low (assuming the Foo Fighters don't get it first). I DON'T KNOW HOW BUT THEY FOUND ME hits top 5 with "Leave Me Alone", and Royal & The Serpent hits top 10, along with "Mood", after the song spent multiple weeks in rock airplay's top 10. Adding to the Foo Fighters, Billie Eilish, and The Knocks debuts is a song from Two Feet.

AC/DC remain #1 for their second week on Mainstream Rock. Badflower and Deftones move up to #2 and #3, with I Prevail blocked by Foo Fighters' massive boost. No other songs hit the top 10, although Ayron Jones and Greta Van Fleet swap places, as do Royal Blood and Three Days Grace. Corey Taylor's former #1 "Black Eyes Blue" drops four places to #6, and Seether's former #1 "Dangerous" drops to #12 from #6. There are three debuts, two of which are former or current hard rock chart-toppers. These two come from Bring Me The Horizon and System Of A Down respectively, with the other charting song coming from Marilyn Manson.

Bruce Springsteen likewise remains #1 for his second week on the triple A charts. "Letter To You" is his first #1 on the chart in eighteen years. Phoenix replaces Tame Impala at #2 with "Identical", and Of Monsters and Men's "Visitor" hits top 5. Fleet Foxes "Can I Believe You" hits the top 10. On top of the Foo Fighters massive debut, there are debuts from Wallows & Clairo, Gorillaz & Beck, Bakar, and Ray LaMontagne.
